Birthday parties are one of the best ways to celebrate the milestones in a child's life. Hosting kids birthday parties can be overwhelming but with some solid theme party ideas, it simplifies the process!

I'm diving into the magical world of rainbow-themed birthday parties. For Emmie's 5th Birthday, we hosted it at our home with her entire class! I was nervous, but it's safe to say that Luxe Play Oasis Bounce House (part of Soft Play Oasis here) in the North Shore of Chicago, IL made the party!

All Emmie wanted was a unicorn & rainbow theme party. I set out to tackle it about five weeks before the party started. The rainbow theme offers a canvas of vibrant colors and endless possibilities for creativity. I'll be sharing a roundup of ideas to help you plan an unforgettable rainbow-themed birthday bash.

Rainbow Birthday Party Invitations:

  1. Vibrant Rainbow Invitations: Kick off the rainbow theme right from the start with colorful invitations featuring a rainbow design. These invitations will set the tone for a bright and cheerful celebration.

  2. Unicorn-Themed Invitations: Since unicorns and rainbows go hand in hand, consider unicorn-themed invitations for a touch of whimsy. Paperless post is always my go-to for easy invitations. They have a fun picture invitation that's perfect for the theme. It even has a rainbow!

Rainbow party decor might be one of the easiest things to find on Amazon and Etsy. The most important thing to decide first is whether you want a traditional primary colored rainbow or a pastel rainbow. I chose to go with the lighter pastel colored rainbow.

  1. Rainbow Balloon Arch: Start with a stunning rainbow balloon arch that welcomes guests with a burst of color. It's a fabulous backdrop for photos and adds instant wow-factor. I ordered this one from a small business owner on Amazon. It took me about three hours to put together. What made a big difference was buying this arch to support it.

  2. Rainbow Table Settings: Use rainbow-colored tablecloths (like these), plates, napkins, and utensils to tie the theme together. Add colorful centerpieces and confetti for an extra pop.

  3. Seasonal Touches: Depending on the time of year, consider incorporating seasonal elements into your decorations, such as rainbow-hued flowers in spring or colorful leaves in the fall. Near the snacks table, I included a few vases of seasonal zinnias from our cut flower garden.

Food Ideas For Rainbow Birthday Party:

I kept it simple because I hosted the birthday party in mid-September -- AKA bee season! So, I wanted all packaged products. To keep it easy, I picked up individually packed fruit snacks, goldfish and apple sauce.

Then, I had several coolers of juice boxes and water bottles as well as High Noons and Coronas for the adults. If you want to create more on-theme food, you could explore:

  1. Rainbow Cupcakes: Bake or order rainbow-themed cupcakes with multi-colored frosting. Top them with rainbow sprinkles for a delightful treat. I picked up pink, purple, white and blue cupcakes from our local grocery store and added unicorn charms to them. You could serve the cupcakes with ice cream, but I decided to keep it simple and skip it.

  2. Rainbow Fruit Platter: Arrange a vibrant fruit platter with strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, and more. It's a healthy and visually appealing addition to the spread.

  3. Colored Candy Buffet: Create a candy buffet featuring candies in every color of the rainbow. Use glass jars and containers for an eye-catching display.

  4. Rainbow Cake: Another idea is a rainbow cake. I bought a small white cake with rainbow sprinkles for Emmie to blow out and then family to eat. To keep it simple (and more sanitary), we served cupcakes to all of our guests. Here’s the topper I found.

Rainbow Birthday Party Activities:

  1. Renting a Bouncy House: The Luxe Play Oasis Bounce House & Soft Play Zone is a fantastic choice for keeping kids entertained. Bouncy houses are a guaranteed hit, offering hours of active fun. It truly made the party. Not only was it beautiful, but it kept the kids entertained and safe for hours! You can read more about them here

  2. Unicorn Mask Making Zone: I had a folding table with these little kid chairs. I picked up a pack of Unicorn Masks from Oriental Trading as well as 3 packs of markers from Target. The kids (girls in particular) LOVED it! Nearly everyone made one.

  3. Bubble Wands and Chalk: Keep little ones occupied with bubble wands and chalk for some outdoor play. They can blow bubbles and create colorful sidewalk art.

  4. Pinata - The pinata was amazing and scary all at the same time. The kids loved it and the toy fillers I found were a perfect complement to the rainbow party favors I found. I say it was scary though because the kids were swinging a stick at me for a few minutes trying to hit the actual pinata. Having a few adults on hand to help maintain the line, bring up kids and manage the overall flow was key to safety and fun here.

Luxe Play Oasis Review

Luxe Play Oasis review

Luxe Play Oasis is part of the Soft Play Oasis company in the North Shore of Chicago. I worked with the owner, Linda, to plan our bounce house and soft play zone. Here are a few things I loved:

  • Luxe Play Oasis sets up and tears down the day of the party

  • Their bounce houses and soft play zones are beautiful -- it complements any party theme

  • They sanitize the equipment in between parties

  • The soft play zone has not only a mat but a fence around the play zone. It keeps it safe and contained.

I truly can't rave enough about Luxe Play Oasis because it was so much better than I even imagined. It's the first preschool birthday party where I was actually able to hang out and visit -- and I was the host! That's unheard of.

You can always inquire about pricing and themes on their website.

Bounce House Review

How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Bouncy House:

Renting a bouncy house can vary in cost depending on factors such as location, duration, and size. A company, like Soft Play Oasis, that manages set up and tear down is key to an easy event. For the soft play zone rental, it costs $625 and then you can add on a bounce house for $225. You can always inquire about pricing and themes on their website. The average going rate in the Chicago area for modern bounce houses start at $295 or more based on size.

It's a worthwhile investment for the sheer joy it brings to children's faces and the peace of mind it provides to parents. Plus, if you can host at home, this saves on the cost of a venue and other entertainment.

Is a Bounce House worth it?

I can't recommend a bounce house without a soft play zone in my Soft Play Oasis review. The pair made the party!

It's active, inclusive and entertains kids for literally hours! Plus with a bounce house & soft play zone, kids can float back and forth between the two spots.

In particular, I loved Luxe Play Oasis set up because there was a soft mat and white fence around the area. Parents could actually hang out and enjoy themselves!

Other Toddler Birthday Party Themes

Creating a birthday party theme can be the toughest part. If you're stuck brainstorming, here are 15 other themes:

1. Safari Adventure:

Transform your backyard into a jungle with safari decorations, animal masks, and a treasure hunt for little explorers.

2. Under the Sea:

Dive into an underwater world with mermaids, pirates, and ocean-themed decorations. Activities can include a "fish pond" game and a sandcastle-building contest.

3. Superhero Bash:

Let your child's favorite superheroes take center stage. Encourage guests to come dressed as their favorite characters and set up a training course for mini heroes.

4. Princess Tea Party:

Host an elegant tea party fit for royalty. Decorate with tiaras, tea sets, and pastel-colored tableware. Guests can enjoy tea (or juice) and dress up in princess attire. If you host a princess party, be sure to check out Learning with Kelsey's Princess Sensory box! I wrote an entire review about her products here.

5. Dinosaur Excavation:

Create a prehistoric adventure with dinosaur decorations and a fossil excavation activity. Kids can dig for dinosaur bones and learn about these fascinating creatures.

7. Outer Space Odyssey:

Blast off into space with cosmic decorations, astronaut helmets, and space-themed crafts. Explore the wonders of the universe with educational activities.

8. Farmyard Fun:
