Totally Awesome Neon 80s Party Theme Ideas for a Birthday

I love themed parties, and an 80's theme party is one of the best party themes in my opinion. As a baby of the 80s, it's the era of Michael Jackson, donkey kong, shoulder pads, big hair, Cyndi Lauper, and neon colors. I frankly love all of the bright colors and thought it would be a fun way to celebrate my 30th birthday.

My 20s were unbelievably fun.  They were filled with attending college and making new lifelong friends; getting my first job and adjusting to working full-time; dating a few guys that shaped what I want in life, which eventually led me to my husband; buying our first home together and fixing it up; and starting own business, living through the tribulations as a first time entrepreneur.

I hosted this party for my 30th birthday, but it can easily be adopted for a 40th Birthday Party, too! I’m lucky to still be close to all of my high school friends, and even more fortunate that I nearly share a birthday with one of them, Katie.  We decided we’d host a joint themed 30th birthday to ‘Party like it’s 1987.’  Tapping into the MTV-crazed era was essential as was the crimped hair, off the shoulder tops and tulle skirts. I am so excited to share the best 80s party ideas with you!

80s Theme Party Decorations & Food

The decorations and food at our 80s-themed birthday party were integral to creating a nostalgic atmosphere. It was anything but a simple design. The centerpiece of our decor was the 'Saved by the Bell' backdrop, a nostalgic nod to the iconic TV show that instantly transported our guests back to the '80s. This backdrop not only served a focal point during our dance party, but also became the epicenter for countless memorable photo opportunities. In an era where Instagram wasn't as big, it would be a definite must-have for party guests today.

We wanted to make it easy for our guests to dress up, so we bought a variety of 80s-themed accessories. These accessories not only filled the space but were also interactive elements for our guests to wear . It was a strategic move to make the decor a part of the experience, allowing our friends to vibe with the theme.

Our choice of cake from Sweet Mandy B's added another layer of vibrancy to the celebration. Ordering a cake with a predominantly pink and neon color palette captured the essence of the '80s. To elevate the cake further, we opted for fun and quirky cake toppers, injecting a playful touch into the dessert presentation.

The husbands took charge of sourcing the perfect retro beers to complement the theme. Their efforts resulted in a selection that included Old Style, a nod to the classic beverage associated with the iconic 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off,' and Zima, a clear malt beverage that was emblematic of the '80s. These retro beers not only added authenticity to the beverage choices but also sparked conversations among guests about the era's popular drinks.

Incorporating these thoughtful details into the decorations and food choices contributed to an atmosphere that was not only visually engaging but also rich in nostalgia, making our 80s-themed birthday party an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

80s Outfits and Look

The outfit and look for our 80s-themed birthday party turned out to be an unexpectedly delightful highlight, making it a memorable aspect of the celebration. Contrary to my usual approach, I found immense joy in crafting the perfect '80s persona. My friend Katie and I decided to get our hair done. We found Blown Away in Lincoln Park, who not only had skills but also added a nostalgic touch by dusting off their crimpers from storage. I felt like I stepped out of an 80s music video. The result was a fantastic and authentically '80s hairstyle that set the tone for the entire look. Bonus points for crimped hair, right?

For our makeup transformation, we turned to Tish at Benefit on Armitage. Her expertise in creating bold and vibrant '80s-inspired makeup looks added the finishing touches to our throwback ensembles. We transformed into full-fledged '80s fashionistas.

Our outfits, sourced from Amazon, provided the perfect canvas for our nostalgic journey. To infuse a personalized touch, we decided to jazz them up with vibrant neon tulle that we purchased separately. This added flair not only enhanced the overall aesthetic but also allowed us to express our individual styles within the broader '80s theme. The combination of crimped hair, bold makeup, and uniquely accessorized costumes created a look that resonated with the vibrancy of the era.

What made the night truly special was witnessing everyone fully embracing their costumes. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by our friends added an infectious energy to the party, turning it into a lively and joyous celebration. Reflecting on the experience, I find myself hoping for another opportunity to dive into the world of '80s fashion. I even have an '80s bridesmaid dress waiting for the perfect occasion, eager to relive the magic of that unforgettable night.

Many of our guests dressed up as their favorite 80s movie characters and music icons. Think Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Top Gun, Space Invaders, Boy George & Breakfast Club.

80s Decor & Theme Party Inspiration

When planning your own 80s-themed 40th birthday party, drawing inspiration from diverse sources can elevate the celebration to a whole new level. From the party invitations to themed party favors, the trick is carrying the theme through all of your party supplies.

You need a vibrant balloon arch. I found a must-have from Eleven Note via Pinterest, available on Amazon. It's eye-catching and not only serves as a nostalgic backdrop but also sets the stage for iconic photo opportunities.

For a more straightforward yet impactful approach, opt for a black balloon arch adorned with squiggly neon balloons. This versatile decor piece, found on Hostess with the Mostess, adds a touch of the '80s to doorways and creates a dynamic visual experience.

Channel the MTV era with a sweets table featuring an astronaut cake reminiscent of OKC Sweets' creation. This nod to the pinnacle of '80s culture captures the essence of the decade's fascination with outer space and music television. I found so many great ideas when it came to cakes that it was hard to pick just one.

You can always tap into the essence of 80s bright and sugary foods. Although, honestly, I think we all eat a lot cleaner these days. However, you could do a clean version of Piña Coladas to cue Miami Vice or Long Island Iced Teas. If you want to go full blown 80s food, grab retro snacks like Jell-O molds and Pop Rocks, your guests will indulge in a feast that transports them back in time.

For the table, I would use neon tablecloths. Your 80s-themed 40th birthday party can encapsulate the spirit of the iconic decade, offering a kaleidoscopic experience that resonates with the vibrant energy of the '80s.

It would also be fun to lean into something more simple like a black balloon arch and add squiggly neon balloons to it as well. This balloon arch is perfect for a doorway.

As the neon lights dimmed and the beats of our fave '80s tunes faded away, it hit us – our 80s-themed 40th birthday bash was a total blast! The whole place was like a time machine with geometric patterns, arcade games, and an authentic '80s dance floor.

Our awesome guests weren't just spectators; they were part of the action. The giant Rubik's cube turned into a friendly challenge, and the costume contest brought out the wildest '80s movie character interpretations. Think Ferris Bueller's Day Off meets The Breakfast Club, and you've got the vibe. Bon Jovi rocked the airwaves, and inflatable microphones added a fun touch.

Our cool party favors, like Rubik's cubes and Pop Rocks, made sure everyone went home with an '80s keepsake. The 'Saved by the Bell' photo booth, decked out with neon tablecloths and record covers, captured the night's joy and camaraderie perfectly.

From karaoke under the neon lights to a Trivial Pursuit showdown on '80s trivia, the party mixed entertainment with waves of nostalgia. Our Miami Vice-inspired decorations, with their simple yet punchy designs, transported everyone back to that iconic era.

Looking back, it was more than just a party; it was a journey through the best of '80s pop culture. The second round of '80s theme parties turned out to be the perfect chance to relive the magic. As the laughter and excitement echoed in our unique space, Friday night turned into a highlight, bringing back the fast times and unforgettable moments of the '80s.

Our celebration, drenched in the spirit of American pop culture, became a birthday bash for the books. From the first quirky find at thrift stores to the beats of our favorite movie soundtracks, every detail added to the epic fun. Toss in social media to share the festivities beyond the night, and you've got an '80s shindig that's not just a party but a nod to the timeless appeal of the popular '80s.

In a nutshell, our 80s-themed 30th birthday party wasn't just a celebration – it was a rad fusion of retro games, wicked guitar solos, and Spandau Ballet hits. The whole experience left its mark, turning the celebration into more than just a birthday – it was a tribute to the evergreen charm of the popular 80s. I'm thinking about redoing the whole party for a 40th birthday, which is shockingly in a few years. Should I do it? More 80s American popular culture anyone?
